Ireland’s Ancient Alphabet
Ogham is the earliest known writing system used for the Irish language, with surviving inscriptions dating back to around the 4th century. Long before modern Irish was written as we know it today, these distinctive lines and notches were carved into stone across Ireland.
The Language of Lines
The original Ogham alphabet was formed from 20 characters, created using groups of lines positioned along a central stem. On standing stones, the edge of the stone itself often became that stem, with inscriptions traditionally read upwards from the bottom.
Messages Carved in Stone
Around 400 Ogham inscriptions survive today, roughly 350 of them in Ireland. Many were carved into standing stones as memorials or territorial markers, preserving personal names, family connections and traces of lives lived more than 1,500 years ago.
A Connection Through Time
Ogham began as a way of recording names and identity. Today, those same ancient characters offer a connection between language, ancestry and place — turning a word or name into something that carries a distinctly Irish story.
