Sterling silver is made to be lived in. It can handle everyday wear, but it will react to the real world around it: moisture, sweat, fragrance, chlorine, cosmetics and the air itself. Why sterling silver tarnishes
Sterling silver is usually 92.5% pure silver, blended with other metals for strength. Pure silver is soft. The alloy gives a Claddagh ring, pendant or bracelet the durability to be worn, stacked and passed on.
That strength comes with one small reality: sterling can darken when it meets sulphur compounds in the air, moisture or everyday chemicals. The result may be a yellowish cast, a grey film or darker marks in the fine details around the crown, hands and heart.
How quickly this happens depends on your skin, where you live and how you wear it. Sea air, a busy gym routine, humid bathrooms and a heavy hand with perfume can all speed things up. Do not store sterling beside rubber, wool or treated paper for long periods. These materials can contain sulphur compounds that encourage tarnish. It sounds fussy, but a simple fabric pouch solves most of the problem.

Protect the shape as well as the shine

If you want a bright, clean finish, polish lightly and regularly. If you like darker definition around the crown and hands, clean away surface grime but avoid aggressive polishing in those recessed areas. Your jewellery can carry a little age without looking neglected.
